The faculty, staff, students, and alumni of the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College mourn the loss of our esteemed colleague, Dr. Elaine Fischer Marshack, who passed away peacefully in New York City on May 27, 2026.
Elaine was a beloved sister, wife, aunt, partner, mentor, and friend whose warmth, generosity, and wisdom touched countless lives. Throughout her life and career, she remained deeply committed to the values of social justice, human dignity, and equity, dedicating herself to the service of others and to the advancement of the social work profession.

In “A Beacon In East Harlem: 15 Years of The Silberman School Of Social Work,” recently published in Hunter Magazine, the story of Silberman’s first decade and a half comes alive through the alumni, faculty, and community partnerships shaping social change across New York City and beyond.
